Dear team,

In communities across the United States, the maternal health crisis is worsening. States with abortion bans are at risk of becoming maternal health care deserts. And in places like Idaho and Louisiana, they already are.

With your support, the Center's fight to protect access to reproductive health care and to shine a light on the cruelty of abortion bans goes beyond the courtroom. Our research and advocacy tools are used by partners across the movement to advance reproductive rights as human rights.

This includes our newest report, authored with partners at Lift Louisiana, Physicians for Human Rights, and Reproductive Health Impact, documenting the devastating harms caused by Louisiana's extreme abortion bans. [[link removed]]

The study details how Louisiana's laws have changed the day-to-day practice of medicine and the devastating impact they have on people seeking reproductive health care, their communities, and the people who care for them.

Here are just a few of the horrific findings highlighted in the report. [[link removed]] Louisiana's abortion bans have:

* Deterred health care providers from offering an abortion procedure to women with life-threatening pregnancy complications leading to Cesarean surgeries instead. The C-sections were done to preserve the appearance of not performing an abortion.
* Undermined maternal health by pushing back the start of prenatal care BEYOND the first trimester to avoid the risk of miscarriage care being misconstrued as an abortion.
* Exacerbated disparities in historically marginalized communities and groups, who often live in “maternity care deserts” and don’t have the resources to travel out of the state to access abortion care.

This real-life harm is the result of draconian abortion laws. On top of that, many OB/GYNs are leaving states with abortion bans to practice medicine elsewhere. At a time when midwifery care is already scarce and hospitals are shuttering maternity wards—or closing their doors entirely—pregnant people across the U.S. may find themselves hundreds of miles from maternal health care.

Abortion bans harm ALL OF US. The Center's legal and advocacy work to restore and expand abortion rights is inextricably tied to our advocacy for maternal health care. Read the report here and get involved with our work [[link removed]] to build new legal safeguards and improve access to safe and respectful maternal health care for all who need it.

Thank you for your support,
