Dear Friend,
Spring is here and a recent Earthjustice victory is helping honey bees pollinate in peace.
Earthjustice just won another case on behalf of commercial beekeepers and bees! The victory ensures that an insecticide linked to a nation-wide honey bee die-off remains banned in California. This case was not won overnight. California approved the insecticide, called sulfoxaflor, for use in the Golden State in 2020. My colleagues and I challenged its approval, and we won in the trial court. Unfortunately, pesticide manufacturers and the state agency appealed the ruling to a higher court. We refused to back down, and the state Court of Appeal just dismissed the appeals, meaning that our win remains a win and sulfoxaflor remains off the market in California.
This victory is so important, because the widespread agricultural use of insecticides like sulfoxaflor over the past 20 years has contributed to the “insect apocalypse,” with honey bee colonies collapsing en masse. Most commercial bee colonies in the U.S. spend part of the year in California, so a ban on the insecticide in the state protects bees across the country.
The decision is welcome news not just for bees and other pollinators such as monarch butterflies that are harmed by sulfoxaflor, but for agriculture, our food security, and the wider ecosystems upon which we all depend. Earthjustice fights to sustain the biodiversity necessary for our planet to flourish, and this win is a step in the right direction.
The fight to protect honey bees is not over. Earthjustice is currently representing beekeepers and other organizations fighting for food security at both the federal and state level. With your support, we will see this through and save the bees!
Thank you for your continued partnership. We couldn’t do this work without you.
Sincerely,
Greg Loarie
