On Friday, I organized a group to volunteer at Feed More, our regional food bank to help our neighbors facing food insecurity. 

Areas of Virginia’s seventh district have food insecurity rates of over 20%. Additionally, more than 20,000 children face food insecurity in our district every single day. Hunger impacts everything from a child’s ability to learn to a family's ability to feel secure to a senior’s ability to manage her chronic illness. Last month, the administration announced a proposed change to the SNAP program that could threaten the eligibility of up to 3,000,000 SNAP recipients.

Addressing food insecurity in the long term requires a comprehensive approach and the recognition of the impact of Congress’ economic, healthcare, and education policies on food insecurity and hunger.

Community programs, corporate and individual donors, and organizations like Feed More and its networks of food banks serve so many in our community. However, Congress must act to protect the programs and funding that help deliver services and relief to hungry families. I’m proud to serve on the House Agriculture Committee which covers programs that promote food security.
