This November, Democrats could flip the House of Representatives blue, and maintain control of the Senate and White House. This powerful legislative trifecta might seem like the ultimate goal, but if we don’t eliminate the filibuster, we’ll still face obstacles to solving our most pressing problems.

Democrats need to get to work. We must act fast to implement federal protections for abortion access, reproductive healthcare, and voting rights. We have to pass common sense gun laws. We must take action immediately to combat the global climate crisis before it’s too late. To get these things done quickly, we need to eliminate the filibuster.
Since it was implemented, the filibuster has impeded legislative progress by requiring a supermajority of 60 Senators’ votes to pass bills. The filibuster isn’t in our Constitution, and allows a minority of just 41 senators to entirely block legislation supported by the majority. This gives the minority of senators total power over which bills Congress can pass — making them more powerful than the majority. The filibuster is entirely undemocratic.
To make it even worse, the filibuster has a disturbing history of being used to disenfranchise marginalized communities. In the Jim Crow era, the filibuster was repeatedly weaponized to prevent the passage of legislation that would afford basic rights to Black Americans.
We need to eliminate this oppressive and undemocratic mechanism that’s exploited by a bigoted minority. If we don’t, it’ll be incredibly difficult to pass meaningful legislation to address our most pressing issues.
Sign the petition now: It’s time to eliminate the filibuster.
Thanks,
Democratic Values
