Could this be the most undemocratic election in our country????

John, tomorrow, an almost unbelievable (and little-known) election will unfold in Arizona. The Salt River Project (SRP) — the largest public power utility in the country, in terms of raw power generation — will have an election full of rules that feel ripped from the 19th century.

This election matters a lot, whether or not you live in Arizona, because SRP is in charge of making huge, climate-altering decisions about how the community gets power — and whether that power is generated through clean and sustainable means. The decisions of this body affect air and water quality for millions, not just in Phoenix or Arizona, but all across the region.

But here’s the problem: SRP elections allocate votes based on land ownership within these districts — meaning the more acres you own, the more votes you wield. Yes, you read that right.

And the worst part? Due to unchanged voting districts since 1937, nearly half of SRP's ratepayers can't even vote. This leaves renters and many others disenfranchised. It’s an archaic method that gives the fossil fuel industry and the well-connected a huge advantage in this election.

But we’re fighting back.

Not only are we spreading the word to ensure eligible voters have everything they need to vote tomorrow, but we also endorsed the entire SRP Clean Energy slate: a team of climate champions ready to steer SRP toward a carbon-free future and transform Arizona's energy landscape forever.

This election is a reminder of the transformative power of local elections in the broader battle against climate change. Together, we’re laying the groundwork for a greener future, one election at a time.

This is the type of important, often-overlooked work we do at the Jane Fonda Climate PAC, John. We know that, often, the races that don’t get any media attention are the ones that affect us the most — and the ones we have the most power to affect.

That’s why we’re asking for a grassroots contribution today. Each dollar fuels our fight to ensure that every vote and every voice in support of climate action counts. Donate to bolster our efforts here in Arizona and champion climate leaders around the country in 2024 and beyond. >>>
