The results are in, John: the Affordable Care Act worked.
When I was growing up, our family had insurance because my parents were union members, and the unions had fought hard for health insurance. Back then, union membership was high, and folks could count on those benefits.
But by the time the ACA was passed in 2010, 14.2% of Washingtonians were uninsured. That's nearly three out of every 20 people.
There were no health care marketplaces. Many insurers sold "junk plans" that provided little to no coverage. And even reputable insurance corporations routinely refused to cover folks with pre-existing conditions. Families kept their fingers crossed, hoping they didn't get hurt or sick.
Thankfully, times have changed.
By 2022, just 4.7% of Washingtonians were uninsured – less than one third of the 2010 rate!
We've made amazing progress and the ACA has helped Washingtonians live longer and healthier lives. But there's more for us to do. Sadly, both the fight to protect the ACA and the fight to insure every Washingtonian continues.
Low as it is, 4.7% is still greater than zero. Thousands of Washingtonians are still going through their daily life and hoping they don't get sick.
I'm running for re-election to keep working hard for Washingtonians, to improve our health care system, and to make sure every family can get the care they need.
If you are concerned about health care in Washington state and our thousands of neighbors who are uninsured, then please chip in $3 today to help us build a campaign to protect Washington's health care gains and insure everyone who calls Washington home.
Sincerely,
Denny
