John,

At Washington Conservation Action, we have always understood the important role that our state’s commissioner of public lands plays in our state. This statewide elected office is responsible for management and oversight of Washington’s natural resources.

Since April is Earth Month, the importance of state lands in addressing climate change is clear. It’s important that the person leading the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) stands up to powerful interests, focuses on environmental justice, manages resources for all the people, and protects people and nature as one.

That’s why I’m so happy to announce that Washington Conservation Action endorses Dave Upthegrove for Commissioner of Public Lands in the 2024 election. We strongly believe Dave Upthegrove is the only candidate best positioned to win. He will work with the environmental justice community on day one. He will lead the evolution that DNR so needs.

“Washington Conservation Action's sole endorsement is not only a huge boost for my campaign, it's also a major vote of confidence in my strong environmental values, relevant experience, and commitment to bringing people together to better evolve management of our public lands, and moving with urgency to address the threats posed by climate change,” said Dave Upthegrove, chair of King County Council and candidate for Commissioner of Public Lands. “I’m deeply honored and energized to have the support of the environmental community in this race, and with this endorsement I know we are well positioned to win in August and in November. I look forward to working with the conservation and environmental justice community to bring needed changes at DNR for all the people of Washington.”

Dave Upthegrove is best positioned to win in a crowded field, given his grassroots support around the state. Dave also understands the positive role that our state lands play in storing carbon and addressing climate change, while also creating jobs. That perspective is sorely needed in the office of the Commissioner of Public Lands.

WCA has always been at the forefront of making history. When elected, Dave will make history as Washington’s first out-LGBTQ statewide executive elected official.

I’m glad to partner with you in this work. Let’s commit to winning Governor and Commissioner of Public Lands and defeating I-2117 in November!

Onward,
