But is there political will to welcome them?

Dear reader,

Just seven months from the presidential election, rhetoric about the
southern border is at a fever pitch, and lawmakers from both parties are
clamoring for tighter restrictions on asylum seekers. Bad policy choices
and even worse politics have fanned nativist flames to reject the
post-World War II consensus of providing a refuge for victims of
persecution, but even now, many parts of the country are having success
with resettlement and opening their communities to people in need.

For the

**Prospect**'s April 2024 issue, immigration expert

**Dara Lind** went in-depth on the current state of our asylum system,
and how the postwar imperative to act as a safe haven, generally
accepted by presidents of both parties, gave way to the Trumpist
rhetoric and policy we see now. The Biden administration, despite their
promises, has not been as aggressive in rebuilding the refugee program
after Trump, and the systems currently in place are far from enough.

It's clear: the U.S. isn't full, and its people are still willing to
welcome refugees. What's in question is whether the political will
exists to make that happen.

You can read Dara Lind's piece here.
