Burglar Targets 3 Eagle Rock Small Businesses Overnight

A burglar smashed through three small businesses in Eagle Rock overnight, leaving local business owners shaking as law enforcement continue to search for the culprit. Surveillance footage captured a man breaking into the front door of the Cheebo restaurant on Colorado Boulevard around 4 a.m. Sunday. After successfully making his way through, the burglar makes a beeline for the cash register and swiftly exits the premises in under a minute. “What’s worrisome is that he knew exactly where the till was,” said George Tripodakis, the general manager of the American restaurant. “In the beginning, I was thinking it was like just a random act but now I can see that he did his research whenever he did this.” Tripodakis believes this is the same culprit who also targeted nearby Loop Espresso Club and Chateau Lemongrass. He got a call from one of the nearby business owners after the burglar tripped their silent alarm. Michael Nogueira, who lives in the area, said he’s noticed a pattern in these burglaries.

Aggravated Assaults Are Rising In California, Driven By Gun Violence, Researchers Say

Researchers across California are concerned as aggravated assaults continue to rise, driven by what they say is an increase in crimes involving guns. Although some kinds of violent crime — including rape and homicide — are trending down, aggravated assault numbers are up, outpacing the nationwide average, according to data from the FBI. From 2013 to 2022, aggravated assaults using firearms in Riverside, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino counties nearly doubled, with more than 14,000 crimes reported, according to the California Department of Justice. “When we consider where the biggest increases are, it’s in instances that involve firearms and guns,” said Magnus Lofstrom, policy director at the Public Policy Institute of California, a nonprofit think tank. “Guns are a major part of the story here, but we don’t know to what extent it’s driving that increase.” Fully piecing together what has led to this trend will take several years, researchers say.

LA County Health Officials Urge People To Stay Out Of Ocean

This weekend's storm has resulted in potentially higher bacteria levels flushed down rivers and streams by rain water and prompted the Los Angeles Department of Public Health to advise people to stay out of the ocean and avoid water that ponds on beach sand. The advisory for all Los Angeles County beaches will remain in effect until 8 a.m. Wednesday. Water typically used for recreation in bays and beaches -- especially near discharging storm drains, creeks and rivers -- can be contaminated with bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash and other public health hazards that wash from city streets and mountain areas when it rains, health officials said. The advisory could be extended if there is additional rainfall. People can get updates on beach conditions 24/7 at 800-525-5662 or view a map of impacted areas at PublicHealth.LACounty.gov/Beach/.
