John,

I truly believe that the power to lead is within all of us.

I found mine when I was eight.

I grew up on the west side of San Francisco -- in a tiny studio apartment with my five siblings. Everyone was expected to pitch in at my parent’s dry cleaning business. And as the second-oldest, they leaned on me quite a bit.

Mom and Dad didn’t speak English, so I managed the books – dealing with banks and suppliers. I learned how numbers add up, but also what these numbers meant for our family. If weekly earnings came up short, that could mean one less carton of milk or a loaf of bread.

That was several decades ago, but it’s an experience many Californians still live with today. Things are out of balance, and the rising cost of living is leaving too many to fend for themselves.

When I managed California’s budget and finances, I always remembered those days of my youth handling the books. It was a reminder that behind the numbers are real people.

The affordability crisis is hurting millions of Californians, raising serious questions about what the coming years will bring. I believe that with competent, accountable leadership -- and with a Governor who knows how to get the most out of every dollar in the state budget -- we can build a California that adds up for all of us.

That’s why I’ve stepped up to run, but I’ll need your help to get there:

Please chip in $3 to join on as an early supporter of my campaign. Your contribution will send an important message that we are ready to build a California that adds up for all of us.
