2024 SiX National Conference Registration Open

We are thrilled to announce that early registration is now open for SiX’s 2024 national conference! Our conference will be held December 11-13, 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia. This year’s conference theme is Irresistible Futures: Moving from Impossible to Inevitable. Hundreds of state legislators and trusted partners from around the country will gather, reflect, and plan for a future where all people have power and agency over their lives. Join us!

SiX Launches Economic Power Project

States across the country are facing legislative proposals criminalizing people experiencing homelessness, as well as banning local guaranteed income programs— rolling back innovative local programs that advanced racial and economic justice. These abusive preemptions are designed to maintain structural barriers to prosperity, and are pushed by national billionaire-backed think-tanks, specifically the Cicero Institute and the Foundation for Government Accountability. They are part of a coordinated network of extremists billionaires, think-thanks, and corporations pushing state laws to privatize public education, bust public sector unions, and roll back child labor protections, as well as erase Black history and criminalize queer kids.

In the face of these increased attacks, SiX is proud to launch the Economic Power Project, a national economic justice initiative, to organize legislators across state boundaries who are committed to building economies that empower people and advance justice. Learn more here.

A State Legislator’s Guide to Direct Pay

Last month, the IRS issued final regulations on direct pay of clean energy credits for state and local governments and tax-exempt organizations. Check out our legislator guide to building jobs and sustainable public energy and our stakeholder webinar (and this teaser video from our partners at the Congressional Progressive Caucus Center or CPCC) featuring Michigan State Rep. Abraham Aiyash, the BlueGreen Alliance, the CA Green New Deal Coalition, and CPCC for more information!

Honoring Black Maternal Health Week

Join the week of action in honor of Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW)! This year’s week of action will take place April 11-17th, 2024, with the theme Our Bodies STILL Belong to Us: Reproductive Justice NOW!

The BMHW campaign, spearheaded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, was created to raise awareness, inspire activism, and build community support for the issues and policies impacting the health and rights of Black mothers and birthing people.

This official toolkit contains key messaging, social shareables, and materials related to BMHW 2024. Stay tuned for state legislator social media graphics in April!

Coastal State Legislators Take on Industrial Aquaculture

The SiX Agriculture & Food Systems Team is excited to partner with Don’t Cage Our Oceans for a first-of-its-kind three-day experiential learning training July 12-14, where legislators from coastal states will gather to gain a deeper understanding of the local & regional impacts of industrial aquaculture and the role federal and state policy play in supporting working waterfronts and local fishing economies. Check out this explainer on industrial aquaculture or “factory fish farms.”

Future of Democracy

SiX's Democracy Program was selected by Brown University for a Policy in Action project. This research project will help us understand and scrutinize the effect that emerging technologies like artificial intelligence will have on our country's democratic institutions and civil society. The collaboration will lay the foundation for the launch of the "Future of Democracy" - a new SiX initiative that will develop state-level actors’ capacity to confront the threats emerging technologies pose on American democracy. Stay tuned for more information!

State legislators, if you’d like to go deeper into SiX’s issue areas, join our legislator cohorts: the Economic Power Project, the Cohort for Rural Opportunity and Prosperity, the Democracy Project, and the Reproductive Freedom Leadership Council!
