John,
Under the misguided leadership of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, mail delivery has slowed to a crawl, rates have skyrocketed, post offices are shuttering their doors, and hard-working postal employees have lost their jobs.
That’s why in 2022, Congress passed the Postal Service Reform Act, finally giving the USPS the authority to offer new services like postal banking. And yet, over a year later, DeJoy and his USPS leadership have failed to act.
This inaction is unacceptable and comes at the expense of the American people, especially the over 7 million households who are unbanked and lack access to affordable financial services.
Postal banking is a proven solution that would benefit both the USPS and the communities it serves. By providing basic, low-cost financial services at post office locations nationwide, the USPS could generate substantial new revenue to strengthen its bottom line.
Sign the petition to Congress: Immediately reintroduce and pass postal banking legislation now.
Predatory payday lenders have long exploited the unbanked, trapping them in cycles of debt with exorbitant fees and interest rates.
Postal banking would give people a reliable public option, offering services like checking and savings accounts, debit cards, ATM access, and even small-dollar loans at a fraction of the cost charged by payday lenders.
This would put money back in the pockets of working families and allow them to build savings and financial stability.
In 2020, we had a real chance to make postal banking a reality with the Postal Banking Act, but it was sabotaged by DeJoy and his conservative cronies in Congress. We cannot let this opportunity slip away again.
Tell Congress to find its backbone, stand up to the special interests, and take bold action for the people by reintroducing and swiftly passing comprehensive postal banking legislation now.
Together, we can ensure the USPS thrives while empowering millions with access to fair, low-cost financial services.
