Dear Friend,

Happy Women’s History Month! Throughout March, we’ve been highlighting women in government who are fighting for women’s rights to remain intact – both in their communities and across the nation.

For our last profile, we’re celebrating Eva Burch of Arizona, who showed us just how important it is to protect reproductive rights.

Senator Eva Burch was elected to the Arizona State Senate in 2022, defeating a Trump-endorsed Republican. She quickly assumed leadership roles as the minority whip, but Senator Burch is now making history for an experience that many Arizonans have shared – she just had an abortion for a nonviable fetus.

Arizona currently bans abortions after 15 weeks, with minimal exceptions.  Understanding the hurdles women face while seeking abortions, Burch gave a stirring speech on the Senate floor to announce that she planned to undergo her second abortion.

She shared with her colleagues and constituents that Arizona’s restrictions are out of touch and misleading – as she was not only forced to go through a 24-hour waiting period and invasive ultrasound, but also given counseling and “alternatives” for her abortion.

As someone who not only received an abortion, but also works as a nurse practitioner at a woman’s clinic, Burch has dedicated her life to fighting to protect reproductive rights for others. After directly experiencing the repercussions of Roe v. Wade’s reversal by the ultra-conservative Supreme Court, Burch wanted to share her story with voters.

Senator Burch is the first pregnant state lawmaker to go into such detail about her plans to get an abortion since Roe’s demise. She is not only speaking out, but also, combating these dated restrictions by proposing a ballot measure that would make abortion a constitutional right in Arizona as she seeks reelection.

In solidarity,

Future Coalition
