In this week's installment of We Can't Believe We Have To Talk About This Bullshit, the White House is pushing back against a Republican onslaught of incredibly stupid attacks on President Biden for issuing a proclamation in support of transgender people on — gasp! — the same day as Easter. Transgender Day of Visibility occurs annually on March 31. Annually, as in every year. Since 2009. Easter, on the other hand — as all devout Republican Christians surely know — falls on a different day every year. This year it was March 31. Last year it was April 9. Next year it will fall on April 20 (puff, puff, pray!). But that didn't stop serial philanderer and infamous sex pest Donald Trump and his Republican goon squad from attacking Biden's "blasphemous" message honoring transgender Americans. House Speaker and man who literally tasked his son with monitoring dad's access to porn Mike Johnson said Biden, a devout Catholic, "betrayed the central tenet of Easter — which is the resurrection of Jesus Christ." Oh, for f*ck's sake. The existence of another holiday is not an affront to your holiday. If you celebrated Easter yesterday, you lost NOTHING by Transgender Day of Visibility also existing. Can we please be done with these disingenuous clowns?

GOP Rep. and Michigan man who probably enjoys kicking puppies in his free time Tim Walberg told constituents at a town hall this week that the United States shouldn't be "spending a dime on humanitarian aid" in Gaza and that the conflict should be treated "like Nagasaki and Hiroshima," blithely referencing the two Japanese cities absolutely flattened by American atomic bombs during World War II. Called out for his heinous bullshit, Walberg backpedal, explaining he was merely using a metaphor to "convey the need for both Israel and Ukraine to win their wars as swiftly as possible, without putting American troops in harm's way." Ahh, now it makes sense! We should withhold all humanitarian aid and metaphorically nuke Gaza to ensure that "fewer innocent lives will be caught in the crossfire." Wonderful hot take, Tim.

Nearly HALF of Congress’ top staffers want to quit
Senior congressional staff are tempted to follow the lead of multiple members of Congress and bolt for the exits, according to a survey by the Congressional Management Foundation reported by The Washington Post. The survey found that nearly half of top congressional aides are considering leaving their posts due to "heated rhetoric from the other party," while only about one in five senior aides believe Congress is "functioning as a democratic legislature should." As troubling as that sounds and surely is, we'd really like to speak with the 20% of staffers who somehow think everything is peachy keen in an historically ineffectual Congress fundamentally broken by Republican clowns determined to burn American democracy to the ground.

Lead in the drinking water is STILL a problem in the US — especially in Chicago
Yes, it's 2024. And, yes, the United States is supposedly both the richest and greatest nation on Earth, but don't look too closely under the hood. For millions of Americans, lead exposure is still very real, despite the toxic metal being banned in water pipes for nearly 40 years. In Chicago alone, about 400,000 homes still get their tap water through lead service lines — pipes that connect individual homes to the main water line. And nearly 70% of young children are getting exposed to lead from their home tap water, according to recent estimates published in JAMA Pediatrics. The study also finds that — stop us if you've heard this before — Black and Hispanic neighborhoods are more likely to have lead exposure, but less likely to be tested for lead.

Chinese accounts posing as MAGA-loving Trump fans ahead of election
It's 2016 all over again, apparently. According to a New York Times report, China is now using fake online accounts pretending to be real Trump-supporting Americans to sow division and attack President Biden ahead of the 2024 presidential election, using a tactic Russia implemented to worrying effect in 2016. One Chinese account, allegedly describing itself as "MAGA all the way," attacked Biden’s age and claimed that the president is a Satanist pedophile. Another account on X that used a Western name and referenced "MAGA 2024" posted about a bogus claim from Russian state media that a neo-Nazi gangster had been sent by the CIA to fight in Ukraine — a post that was then allegedly shared by sentient hemorrhoid Alex Jones to his millions of followers. Some of the accounts reportedly posted pro-Beijing content written in Mandarin before transforming in recent months in the guise of US nationals posting in English. Careful what you click on out there, folks.
