Supporter,
Breaking news: after requests from polluting industries, Trump's Environmental Protection Agency announced plans to suspend enforcement of regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic — claiming social distancing will make compliance with key environmental protections difficult. The move effectively waives any consequences for releasing dangerous pollutants into the air or water.
Staying safe during this pandemic is a top priority, and we have been pushing Congress to provide financial relief. But suspending enforcement of vital environmental regulations puts us at even greater risk.
Communities who have lived for decades with debilitating air and water pollution face a greater risk of contracting coronavirus. Breathing polluted air decreases lung function, making people in these areas even more vulnerable to the virus's serious complications. Drinking polluted water could make people sicker than they already are.
EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler's unprecedented move is outrageous. We're working as fast and hard as we can to stop it — ramping up our legal, advocacy, and grassroots efforts. We need to convince Congress to pass strong protections — especially in the next COVID-19 relief package. But we need your help right now.
Please, rush your monthly gift to the Sierra Club now. Help us ramp up our legal, advocacy and grassroots team to stop this egregious power grab! We'll also send you a free pair of comfy Parks Project Half Dome socks with our thanks.
Once again, Wheeler's special brand of negligence and cruelty will hit already marginalized communities the hardest. Of course, it's just the latest example of the Trump EPA's toxic track record of ignoring doctors and scientists when it comes to climate science and the dangers of oil and gas drilling, fracking, mining, agricultural runoff and more.
Power plants— want to discharge a little extra mercury, arsenic, and lead into the water? No fine. Factories, want to spew a little more benzene or methylene chloride into the air? No citation. Want to take more time on that Superfund cleanup? No hurry.
As a valued member of our Sierra Club community, I know you care about protecting our most vulnerable from further harm. Please, help the Sierra Club fight for our public health and safety with as generous a contribution as you can manage today.
If Trump and Wheeler want a fight, they've got it. I'm so grateful to have you with us in the fight against this shameless giveaway to the oil, gas and coal industries.
Onward, again!
