The Easter season is a time for us to renew our commitment to the values and principles that define who we are.
My dad – a Lutheran minister in Detroit who worked with Martin Luther King, Sr. – set an example that Christianity means always doing what is right, even when it’s not easy.
I am still driven by those values today, which is why I feel so strongly that we must focus on protecting the most vulnerable members of our communities, dismantling systemic inequality in our institutions – from healthcare to housing to our judicial system – and leaving the world a better place than we found it.
We have to stand up to the extremists who have weaponized hate and bigotry within our political system so that we can make progress on long-overdue reforms.
Today, as many of us celebrate Easter’s message of spiritual renewal and hope, I recommit myself to the fight for equity, justice, and peace.
Happy Easter!
