March 31 marks the 14th International Transgender Day of Visibility

, a day to celebrate the lives of trans people and their contributions. While there has been some progress made since the Stonewall Uprising in 1969, trans people continue to fight for their civil rights today. The far right's perpetual efforts to erase the trans community has resulted in violence, the spread of disinformation and the enactment of dehumanizing laws.

2023 was a deadly year for trans and gender non-conforming people. At least 32 lives were tragically taken by violent means. 84% of the victims were people of color and 50% were Black trans women according to the Human Rights Campaign.

And in recent years, the increased targeting of trans people can be partly attributed to the far right's strategic spread of disinformation fueled by pseudoscience. The SPLC'S Combating
Anti-LGBTQ+ Pseudoscience Through Accessible Informative Narratives, also known as Project CAPTAIN

, details how it has become a tool of the far right to manipulate public opinion and advance legislation and legal action targeting the LGBTQ+ community.

Right-wing politicians have helped fulfill the goals of anti-LGBTQ+ groups by passing laws limiting LGBTQ+ rights and jeopardizing LGBTQ+ lives through bans on gender-affirming care. As these new restrictions exacerbate existing systemic inequalities, trans people of color as
well as unhoused and impoverished trans people are more likely to lose access to lifesaving medical care. Overall, more than 500 anti-LGBTQ+ laws were introduced

last year, including anti-LGBTQ+ book bans, drag bans and other weaponized legislation.

The SPLC remains committed to fighting for the liberation of trans people today and every day. By challenging unconstitutional laws, advocating for legal protections and working with educators to foster inclusive spaces for students, we can help achieve a world where trans
people can feel safe and live in dignity.
