Dear Friend,

Did you know today is Trans Day of Visibility? This is a day to celebrate
the joy and accomplishments of trans folks, while also shining a light on
the discrimination that continues to harm the trans community. Yet every
day, it feels like we are fighting a new legislative attack, that, at its
core, is the same old discriminatory and hateful rhetoric deceptively
packaged as a way to “protect” the public. We see through the lies! These
attacks are nothing more than a desperate attempt to silence and make
invisible the trans community and we will not allow it!

As it stands, 28 states in the U.S. have failed to guarantee basic rights
and freedoms for LGBTQ+ people. [1] Let that sink in. More than half of
the country is not protected from discriminatory practices for simply
being themselves. No one’s freedoms should be subject to their
geographical location in this country. We need national legislation that
protects everyone, regardless of the state they live in. [ [link removed] ]We need
Congress to support and pass the Equality Act – tell them NOW!

How exactly will the Equality Act impact trans people’s lives?

The Equality Act would codify into law national protections in housing,
employment, education, finance/banking, and public accommodation on the
basis of sex, gender/gender identity, sex characteristics, and sexual
orientation. [2] These protections would ensure that trans people and all
people can confidently and boldly exercise their rights to rent homes,
receive public goods and services, and access health care services.

Congress to pass the Equality Act now!

It's shameful that the Equality Act has not moved in Congress since June
of last year. What's more, support for the Equality Act is overwhelming
among Americans, with more than 80 percent of Americans across a majority
of the 50 states and all major political parties in support of LGBTQ
nondiscrimination protections. [3] This is really a no brainer. We must
ensure that all LGBTQ people feel supported, protected, empowered, and
advocated for. EVERYONE deserves to live their lives free from stigma and
governmental attacks from lawmakers, whose sole job is to represent us,
the people -- that includes Black, Latinx, AAPI, indigenous, disabled,
immigrant LGBTQ people.

Equality Act now!

Trans rights ARE human rights. It is our responsibility to protect them.
MomsRising will continue fighting until everyone has access to housing,
employment, health care, public services – free from hate and
discrimination.

Together we are a powerful voice,

-Taylor, Ruth, Kristin and the whole MomsRising.org/MamásConPoder Team
