His death at the hands of a career criminal is abhorrent and a painful reminder that our heroes in blue risk their lives every day to keep us safe. This weekend, mourners from across New York State and the country paid their respects to fallen hero Officer Jonathan Diller in Massapequa. This is the first funeral Andrew has attended for a line of duty death of a Police Officer and he hopes it will be his last. Unfortunately, if laws fail to treat repeat offenders as the criminals they truly are, this situation is unlikely to improve. In the eulogy of her husband, Stephanie Diller called on New York State elected officials to make a change to protect the men and women in blue. Andrew agrees with her. The NYS Legislature meets next week and can act to fix the anti-cop pro-criminal laws. It shouldn’t require situations like this to convince our state that bail reform needs to change. We stand with you during this difficult time ANDREW IN THE NEWS Long Island to receive $87 million for upgrades in new federal spending bills " More than 50 Long Island projects will get nearly $87 million in federal funds through congressional earmarks in the recently enacted appropriations bills to improve sewers and water mains, upgrade libraries and police departments and boost training and other programs...Long Island’s Republican congressmen, Andrew Garbarino of Bayport, Anthony D’Esposito of Island Park and Nick LaLota of Amityville, and New York’s Democratic senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, requested the funds from the House and Senate Appropriations committees...'We reach out to the municipalities, the villages, the towns or counties, and we ask them for projects that they want to get done,' Garbarino said, who won the three $5 million earmark awards. “Then we go through the projects and find out which ones would qualify for funds and which ones wouldn't under our current rules,'...Congress funded 15 projects totaling $36.4 million submitted by Garbarino. 'These are projects that have had to get done for a long time,” he said, noting that the Amityville Road elevation project has been needed since Superstorm Sandy. ‘Sandy was 2012. North Babylon Holds Monthly Chamber of Commerce Meeting At the North Babylon monthly Chamber of Commerce meeting this week, Andrew's office had the opportunity to address the crowd, reaffirm our commitment to supporting and serving the NY-02 community, hear from constituents, and provide resources and updates. Remaining accessible to his constituents is one of Andrew's top priorities. CASEWORK HIGHLIGHT: Correcting Tax Status For Local Business A constituent from Copiauge recently contacted Andrew's office concerning the status of his business being recognized as an S-corp. The IRS has mistakenly put the S-corp effective date as 2021 when it should have been listed as 2020. Andrew's caseworkers were able to contact the IRS to ensure that the correction was made in a timely manner and his 2020 tax return was processed correctly as an S-corp. Andrew knows how frustrating dealing with bureaucracy can be. That is why he has an entire team dedicated to helping constituents get what they need from the government. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS Andrew Raises Concerns About Criminality At New York Migrant Encampment At Floyd Bennett Field This week Andrew signed a letter to National Park Service Director Charles Sams, demanding answers on the migrant encampments at Brooklyn's Floyd Bennett Field in light of the tragic murder of Laken Riley. In part, the members wrote, "University of Georgia student Laken Riley was recently murdered on campus while jogging and, as described by President Biden, the perpetrator was an illegal immigrant...The Committee is deeply concerned with the Biden administration’s management of American’s public lands, notably at Floyd Bennett Field, and the inherent safety risks to employees at the park, residents of the surrounding communities, and migrants as a result of the decision to lease national park land for a migrant encampment. Moreover, the Committee is concerned about how the criminality at Floyd Bennett Field is part of the widespread lawlessness permeating from the Biden administration’s contempt for the rule of law at the border to the illegal immigrants who were released and spread throughout America." The Members raised concerns about the lack of vetting of migrants housed at Floyd Bennett Field. Read the full letter here. Critical Cybersecurity Reporting Rule Advances This week, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released its proposed rule for incident reporting required by the Cyber Incident Reporting for Critical Infrastructure Act of 2022 (CIRCIA). As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection, Andrew released a joint statement with Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green saying in part, “The Committee has eagerly awaited yesterday’s notice of proposed rulemaking, which was years in the making. While our thorough review is still ongoing, we are committed to ensuring CIRCIA’s implementation is a turning point in national cyber preparedness and fosters a partnership to ensure the government has increased visibility across the critical infrastructure networks."
