CCL hosting online Earth Day event with Katharine Hayhoe

With social distancing during the COVID-19 crisis precluding in-person events and celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, CCL will host a special online event on April 25 at 1 p.m. ET: Uniting from Home: A virtual CCL event with Katharine Hayhoe.

After hearing from CCL Executive Director Mark Reynolds and Dr. Hayhoe, participants will be invited to take an action. They can then join one of several breakout sessions for special training, including Climate Advocate Training for those who are new to CCL. Other sessions will be led by Better Angels and CCL staff. We’ll also have a panel of volunteers who are featured in our video documentaries.

CCL volunteers are encouraged to invite others to this special event.

“Because of Earth Day, April is usually one of our biggest months for grassroots outreach,” said Madeleine Para, CCL VP for Programs. “This year, of course, our volunteers won’t be able to do that kind of outreach, so we hope this event will give everyone an opportunity to introduce friends and neighbors to CCL.”

Other news this week:

VICE News features CCL: In early February, a reporter and camera crew from VICE News covered CCL’s Conservative Climate Lobby Day. Their report was posted online this week, and it prominently features CCL’s conservative volunteers and our advocacy for carbon pricing. Check out the story on Twitter or Facebook.

Hang out with a CCL staffer: Each Friday, volunteers now have the opportunity to have a virtual coffee break, tea time, or happy hour with a member of CCL’s staff on a Zoom conference, where you can get to know them a little and ask questions relating to their areas of expertise. CCL Senior Director of Government Affairs Ben Pendergrass will be online this week. Go to this Community post for a schedule of upcoming get-togethers and details for connecting.

Facebook Live from CCL Europe: Citizens' Climate Lobby volunteers from 13 European countries are working to advance carbon fee and dividend legislation in the European Union. They recently organized lobby meetings in Brussels with EU politicians. Join their Facebook Live event on Saturday, April 4, at 5 p.m. CET (Central European Time) to learn more about their efforts and ask questions. RSVP or tune in here.

If you have more time: Register people to vote. It’s important that people who care about climate change make our voices heard at the polls, so CCL has partnered with TurboVote to help make it happen. Visit cclusa.org/register-to-vote to register to vote, request an absentee ballot, and/or sign up for election reminders. Share that link with your friends on social media or via email, so they can do the same.

Media: Op-ed ties COVID relief and dividends

Last week, we offered a new op-ed from CCL Executive Director Mark Reynolds, and our volunteers wasted no time submitting it to their local papers. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel was one of the first papers to publish, thanks to volunteer Susan Kaye (pictured), who shares the byline with Mark. Here’s an excerpt of the piece, which argues for the idea of dividends to Americans:

“It’s clear that money in the hands of Americans helps keep our economy running. That’s why Congress and the President are about to use that tool in the current crisis. When we’ve dealt with COVID-19, let’s use that same tool to combat climate change.”

In the weeks ahead, this op-ed will appear in more newspapers throughout the country. We want to thank everyone out there who is submitting to their papers and getting the word out.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. If you’d like to learn more about how to pull the media lever like these volunteers did, watch or read our training on op-eds.
