Dear John,
What is the message of Easter? Among many other things, it is this: because of the great mercy of God shown in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, there is now NO CONDEMNATION for us who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).
NO CONDEMNATION for sinners who plead for his mercy.
NO CONDEMNATION for doubters who cling to him.
NO CONDEMNATION for the lost who find him.
NO CONDEMNATION, in short, for anyone who trusts in him.
When I think about what that NO CONDEMNATION means, I am reminded of one of my favorite modern hymns. I'll share it with you below. I’ll keep this email short, hoping that you are celebrating Easter with family and friends this weekend. My prayer for you and for myself: deeper faith in Christ, more connection to his body, the church, and a deeper understanding of the great love he bears for us.
How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure,
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss –
The Father turns His face away,
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory.
Behold the man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders;
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life –
I know that it is finished.
I will not boast in anything,
No gifts, no power, no wisdom;
But I will boast in Jesus Christ,
His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer;
But this I know with all my heart –
His wounds have paid my ransom.
