Friend,
Tomorrow is Transgender Day of Visibility — a day we celebrate, lift up, and honor trans lives as we stand together in our collective quest for equality.
One of the earliest battles in the trans rights movement was the 1966 Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, during which countless brave trans women took a stand against the violent discrimination, harassment, and oppression they faced on a daily basis.
The trans rights movement has always fought for the basics — safety, inclusion, and equal rights.
And we’ve come a long way. In 2021, Mayor Lisa Middleton served as California’s first openly transgender elected official, and in 2023, California became the first state to recognize August as Transgender History Month.
However significant, these wins do not negate the continued attacks against the transgender community. Targeted legislation threatens to block trans people from accessing basic healthcare, education, legal recognition, and the right to exist in public.
In 2024 alone , 428 anti-trans bills have been introduced across 41 states, including right here in California.
These barriers are heightened for trans people of color, who face discrimination on multiple fronts.
It’s time for all of us to show up. We must challenge this injustice at every level of our government. Discrimination has no home here.
Tomorrow and forever, let us continue advocating for more protections, rights, and resources for our trans neighbors. Together , we can build safer, more inclusive communities for everyone.
