Dear Friend,

My name’s Tori Rousay, I’m NCOSE’s Corporate Advocacy Program Manager and Analyst.

I want to tell you about how the way I see sexual exploitation issues radically changed when I first learned about a thing called “deepfake pornography.”

Deepfake pornography is when an innocuous image of a person is edited, often with artificial intelligence (AI) to render the image pornographic.

Anyone’s image can be used to make deepfake pornography. It can happen to you, to me, and to all the people we care about. It's a new terrifying way that people can be sexually exploited.

I first learned about this issue back in early 2021, when I was doing my master’s degree at Harvard University. At the time, not many people talked about deepfakes or AI—but I could see they were burgeoning catastrophes which urgently needed to be addressed. So, I decided to write my master’s thesis on deepfake pornography and the impact AI has on sexual exploitation issues.

Fast forward to 2024. So much has changed in just a few years! With the introduction of generative AI systems like Chat GPT and DALL·E 2, these topics have hit the mainstream consciousness. The news cycle is saturated with articles questioning what these emerging technologies mean for our society.

Pandora's box is open. And it will just open wider and wider, unless we act now.
