Dear Ward 8 Residents,
I understand that this is an uncertain time for many residents. However, it is crucial that all residents follow the stay-at-home order for the District of Columbia. This order reinforces the Mayor’s direction to residents to stay at home except to perform essential activities.
The Mayor’s Order specifies that residents may only leave their residences to:
* engage in essential activities, including obtaining medical care that cannot be provided through telehealth and obtaining food and essential household goods;
* perform or access essential governmental functions;
* work at essential businesses;
* engage in essential travel; or
* engage in allowable recreational activities, as defined by the Mayor’s Order.
Any individual who willfully violates the stay-at-home order may be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, subject to a fine not exceeding $5,000, or imprisonment for not more than 90 days, or both.
To read the full stay-at-home order, please visit [link removed].
The stay-at-home order went into effect at 12:01 am today, April 1, 2020.
I ask that you continue to seek information from the DC Health's website

To mitigate the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), Mayor Muriel Bowser has modified DC Government operations starting Monday, March 16, 2020. The Department of Human Services remains operational and continues to provide essential services; however, there may be changes to how some services are provided. Following below is an overview of DHS services and resources available during modified DC Government operations through Monday, April 27.

UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS *UPDATES* ()
** Important Notes about Applying For Unemployment
------------------------------------------------------------
1. You DO NOT need to be searching for work to qualify for benefits if you lost shifts or your job because of the COVID-19 public health emergency.
The DC Council waived the work search requirement through emergency legislation, but that change is not yet reflected in the online application. It is confusing, and the Bowser administration is working to fix this as soon as possible. You will not be denied when you answer “NO” on the work search question.
2. DOES suggests that COVID-19-affected applicants still answer “NO” on the work search question.
Some applicants have received notices of denial, but the DC City Administrator has confirmed that those claims will still be processed. Keep a file of all paperwork you receive from DOES.
3. DOES has waived the one-week waiting period to receive benefits once approved.
The online application system has not been updated yet to reflect this, but the waiting period is waived.
4. Applicants who are undocumented do not currently qualify for unemployment insurance.
The DC Council is working with the Bowser administration to find a solution to assist undocumented workers as soon as possible.
