Friend --

So many are wondering how they can do their part to serve and lead during these unprecedented and challenging times. National Census Day provides an opportunity to do so today. As NLC leaders and community members, you don’t need to be convinced of the sheer impact and importance that the 2020 Census has our nation, our communities and our people.

So we are asking you help spread the word with your networks: The Census determines apportionment for the next ten years of Congressional and Legislative redistricting; it guides more than $1 trillion in federal and state funding decisions annually; it acts as an important guidepost for nonprofit and small business growth and decisions.

The 2020 Census will determine our communities’ futures. And an undercount of certain populations, such as those who identify as people of color, LGBTQIA*, with disabilities, seniors and kids, homeless and so many more, will have long-term ripple effects on communities who need resources to break down barriers of inequity.

On this National Census Day, please stand up in your role as a community leader and take 3 important - and easy - steps to ensure a complete and accurate 2020 Count:

1. If you haven’t already, take five minutes to #CountMeIn for the 2020 Census. You can now complete the Census form electronically at www.2020census.gov, which will minimize the need for a census taker to head out into communities to follow up.

2. Share with the world that you have taken the Census through a social post.

3. Text, email and call 5 family members, neighbors, friends, and colleagues to say #CountMeIn today, National Census Day. This can be done while maintaining important physical distancing.

As we all stay home to flatten the curve, completing the Census is a simple but incredibly effective way to ensure our government is representative and reflective of the communities we serve. Will you do your part today?

Onward,
