Updates on Proposed MN Latino Museum bill
MLM Render 1
The Minnesota State Legislature is currently reviewing a bill to establish the Minnesota Latino Museum, a significant step towards celebrating Latino heritage in Minnesota. This initiative, envisioned by NeoMuralismos de M?xico and supported by bipartisan state representatives and senators, aims to preserve and highlight the rich contributions of the Latino community to the state's cultural fabric.
The proposed location for the museum, Harriet Island Regional Park in Saint Paul, is deeply significant. It's not just a piece of land; it represents a historical touchstone for the Mexican immigrants who first made Minnesota their home over a century ago. The park's location in both the Downtown Cultural District and the West Side, the only Latino-focused cultural district in Minnesota, underscores the museum's mission to serve as a space for healing, dialogue, and education.
The Minnesota Latino Museum is envisioned as more than a traditional museum. It aims to be a vibrant community space that fosters a deeper understanding of the Latino experience in Minnesota. With plans that include architectural renderings and detailed project summaries, the museum is poised to become a cornerstone of cultural pride and historical acknowledgment for Minnesota's Latino community.
As this project progresses, it highlights the importance of cultural preservation and the power of community in celebrating and honoring our diverse histories. The Minnesota Latino Museum represents a future where the stories of Latino Minnesotans are told with the respect and prominence they deserve.

Update on Increased Teachers of Color Act
*Watch Recap: Senate Finance Committee Hearing* [ [link removed] ]
*Watch Recap: House Finance Committee Hearing* [ [link removed] ]
The 2024 Increase Teachers of Color Act in Minnesota, through SF4107 (Kunesh) and HF4500 (Clardy), aims to enrich the teaching workforce with more BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) educators. This initiative targets closing opportunity gaps by enhancing recruitment, preparation, employment, and retention efforts to better reflect the diversity of Minnesota's student body.
Key to this initiative is the proposed $10 million for the Aspiring Teachers of Color Scholarship program, alongside significant funding for mentorship and retention ($5 million) and the Collaborative Urban and Greater MN Educators of Color Grants ($1 million).
While it seems the bill may not pass this legislative session, it has sparked crucial dialogue about institutionalizing the scholarship program. This conversation indicates a growing recognition of the need for sustained efforts to enhance the diversity of Minnesota's educational workforce, setting the stage for future legislative actions and long-term changes.

As Women?s History Month comes to a close, we want to highlight the achievements of Latina/e women and their fights for equality and equity in every field. A study by the UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute?s Latino Data Hub reveals a promising trend: more Latinas are earning a bachelor?s degree or higher, rising from nearly 1 million in 2000 to a substantial 3.5 million in 2021. The Latino Data Hub indicates that the proportion of Latina adults holding a bachelor?s degree or higher almost quadrupled from 5.4% in 2000 to 20% in 2021. However, the study reveals persistent disparities: Latinas with a bachelor?s degree or higher earn lower wages compared to their Latino and white male counterparts.?

Erick Garc?a Luna, Director of Regional Outreach for the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, produced an economic study about the profile of Mexican immigrants in the region and how they contribute to the Ninth District Economy. ?Mexicans make up the largest share of immigrants in the United States. This fact not only holds for southern states but also, despite colder climates, for states in the Fed?s Ninth District. What do we know about those who have found their way this far north from across the southern border??
