Earlier this week, Democrats flipped a red seat in rural Alabama that no one thought they would win.

How did this happen? Democrat Marilyn Lands told her story clearly and effectively and used the voices of real people and her constituents to highlight the existential threat that the GOP poses to our reproductive rights, access to healthcare, and our freedoms.

In Alabama, a judge ruled that life begins at conception and granted full legal rights to embryos, which directly put at risk in-vitro fertilization (IVF), a process used by millions of Americans across the country to conceive children and start families.

The first election to take place after that ruling resulted in a 25 point swing to Democrats. The same shift is happening right here in Ohio—a substantial majority of 57% of Ohio voters enshrined abortion rights and protections for women directly into our state constitution late last year.

And now, the Ohio GOP is using every lever of power at their disposal to thwart the will of the people. Voters are fired up and ready to punish any and every Republican who is stripping away our rights and ignoring our voices.

Troy Balderson is a strong supporter and sponsor of a national “Life at Conception” act which would establish in federal law what the judge in Alabama did—putting IVF and reproductive freedoms in immediate jeopardy.
