John, As I reflect on the passing of our great friend and leader Senator Joe Lieberman...
Hi John,
As I reflect on the passing of our great friend and leader Senator Joe Lieberman, I keep coming back to the word legacy—because, to me, what is so notable about this loss is not how much has been taken away, but how much remains for us to cherish and carry forward.
Some 2,003 people have served as U.S. Senators in American history, but only a select few have left behind what Senator Lieberman has: an entire movement that continues to strengthen, grow, and benefit our nation. He built the modern center in America, first as a maverick Democrat, then as an Independent, and then as a private citizen through No Labels and his other work.

Senator Lieberman was able to create this movement because of who he was – a rare and gifted leader: tough yet gentle, fearless yet thoughtful, kind yet powerfully honest. It’s why he was admired across parties and uniquely capable of forging consensus on America’s toughest challenges. It’s also why I treasured his mentorship and friendship in the 30 years I knew him.
In the face of our grief, I hope all of us can find comfort in knowing that by being a part of No Labels, we are a part of Senator Lieberman’s legacy. Through our hands, his work continues on.
In the Jewish faith, it is common after a great loss to hear Zekher tzadik livrakha – “May the memory of the righteous be a blessing.”
In the case of Senator Lieberman, it is not just his memory that blesses us but also this living movement he built. It delivered a better America in his lifetime. It is up to us to ensure that the best is yet to come.
Sincerely,
Nancy Jacobson
