Last year, while I was on campus with a friend, I got a notification on my phone about a school shooting just down the road from us.
At the Covenant School in Nashville, a former student armed with two semi-automatic rifles and a handgun shot and killed three nine-year-old students and three staff members. It became the deadliest mass shooting in Tennessee history.
I wish I was surprised, but we've all become accustomed to gun violence in our communities. Inaction was not—and still is not—an option.
So I joined students from over 300 schools across the country in walking out as we called on Congress to take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like the one at the Covenant School. It has been a year, and we are still calling on Congress to do something about the deadly weapons that caused this preventable tragedy.
Join me in honoring the Covenant community by urging your lawmakers to pass a ban on assault weapons.
The day of the walkout I remember a mix of emotions.
As our community continued to grieve, we were joined by thousands of people from all over Nashville—students, teachers, parents, grandparents—and together we used our grief and heartbreak and turned it into action.
Our progress in the past year fills me with hope. We have passed laws recognizing the need to do more about stolen firearms, and we're taking that momentum forward to demand stronger gun safety laws.
Send a message urging your lawmakers to support a ban on assault weapons to prevent future tragedies.
We won't forget March 27, 2023: We will honor the lives lost and the grief of our community by making sure our lawmakers know that we, their constituents, are counting on them to prioritize our lives over political agendas.
