Dear John,

Maine’s motto, Dirigo, means “I Lead.”

On many issues, that is true. From climate action to the superiority of our crustaceans, Maine leads. Today—Census Day—Maine Conservation Voters is challenging you, our members and Mainers across the state to lead the nation in responding to the U.S. Census.

Census Day celebrates our constitutionally mandated civic obligation: participating in the once-a-decade count of every person living in the United States. That count does more than just tell us how many people live where. It provides data that will shape our communities for the next decade, including:

* Congressional representation and legislative districting at the state and federal levels;

* Federal funding for more than 100 programs—including school lunches, highway construction, low-income efficiency and energy assistance; and education;

* Climate change resilience planning at every level of government; and

* Equitable access to renewable energy resources.

An inclusive and complete census will help decision-makers and climate advocates how to best serve communities that have been traditionally hard to count—young people, rural residents, and immigrant communities. The time each of us takes to complete the Census matters to the collective health, safety, and strength of our state, now and for years to come.

The 2020 Census is America’s first online count, with most of us filling out the Census from home. There are options to be counted by phone or mail, too, and enumerators will work through the summer to ensure that everyone, including those experiencing homelessness, is counted. Whichever method you choose, Census Day is the perfect time to lead.

Dirigo!
