A weekly wrap of ADL’s reports, updates and analysis on antisemitism around the world.

This Week’s Topline

U.S. White Supremacist Propaganda Incidents Reach Historic Levels

White supremacist propaganda distribution reached historic levels across the United States in 2023, according to the ADL Center on Extremism’s annual assessment. With an average of about 20 incidents per day, 2023 marked the highest level of incidents since ADL began tracking such data in 2017.

Specifically, antisemitic propaganda increased by 30 percent in 2023, rising to over a thousand such incidents across the country. This increase was largely due to the activity of the white supremacist group Patriot Front, and was also buoyed by online reactions to the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas, as white supremacist leaders applauded the terrorist group and violence against Israelis.

In 2023, white supremacist propaganda was reported in the District of Columbia and every U.S. state except Hawaii and Alaska, with the highest levels of activity (from most to least active) in Virginia, Texas, California, New York, Massachusetts, Missouri, Tennessee, Michigan, Maryland and North Carolina.

This year’s assessment includes an ADL toolkit you can use for responding to hate propaganda, a printable resource with information and guidance for responding to any encounters with hate propaganda in a safe and positive way.

MAKING GOOD PROGRESS THIS WEEK

Not On My Campus Week of Action

Shabbat is a time to slow down, listen and reflect. Since October 7, this tradition has been needed more than ever, providing a reminder of the importance of supporting each other. At a time of rising antisemitism on campus, ADL is joining Jewish Life campus organizations for a nationwide initiative encouraging college students to celebrate Jewish joy through Shabbat this Friday, March 29. Please join us for ONE SHABBAT and share in this timeless tradition. Whether you seek out a Shabbat dinner organized by Jewish Life campus organizations or organize one with your friends, make time to celebrate Jewish pride. What’s News

The Need for Action Following Incidents at U of Michigan: ADL is calling on the University of Michigan to take immediate action after recent antisemitic incidents. In one of these incidents, the University’s Honors Convocation was abruptly ended due to disturbances by anti-Israel protestors. While similar incidents have warranted removal of disruptive parties, the University instead abruptly ended the ceremony. “What should have been a joyous moment for families and students to celebrate academic achievements was instead turned into a stomach-churning display of anti-Zionist fervor, enabled by the University’s inaction,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO.

“Israel is ISIS” and Other Lies about Moscow Terror Attack: Conspiracy theories and antisemitic narratives have flooded social media in the wake of an Islamic State-claimed terror attack at a music venue outside Moscow that killed at least 130 people. Despite the preponderance of evidence that Islamic State was responsible for the attack, extremists and conspiracy theorists have claimed that Jews are responsible for the deadly assault, echoing false narratives created in the wake of other significant terrorist attacks, as well as tropes that Jews have the power to manipulate global events.

Addressing Antisemitism on TikTok: In an open letter, ADL and other leading Jewish organizations are calling on TikTok to undergo an audit of its approach to addressing antisemitism and to take other steps to curb antisemitism and hate. As the open letter notes: “Since the October 7th Hamas attacks on Israel, social media platforms’ contributions to the proliferation of antisemitism and anti-Israel misinformation online have been deeply concerning. Jewish content creators on TikTok and other platforms have been inundated with antisemitic comments, many to the point of leaving platforms entirely.”

Take Action Today

Make your voice heard! Urge the U.S. House to Pass Aid Package that Protects Jews at Home and Abroad. The U.S. House must pass vital defense funding for Israel and provide nonprofit security grants to protect synagogues, religious schools and community centers as antisemitism grows in the wake of the war with Hamas. Nonprofit security grants, which are part of the overall National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism, have been subject to across-the-board spending cuts in the 2024 Federal government funding bill; now is the chance to make sure we make up those funds in an emergency aid package. Join ADL in urging your Representative to take action to keep Jews in Israel and the U.S. safe.
