An original adaptation of James Clavell's novel, FX's Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

| In the midst of a dark sea, a ghostly ship breaks through the fog. The year is 1600, and the Dutch ship, the Erasmus, drifts aimlessly through the night. |

| We begin the second episode with a look back in time to the deathbed of the Taikō. All the powerful warlords have gathered to pay their respects to the man who united Japan. |

|
| Following the assassination attempt, tensions run high in Osaka Castle. When Yabushige is summoned to a pre-dawn meeting with Toranaga, he fears his double-dealing has been discovered. |

| After the thrilling escape from Osaka, we return to the small fishing village of Ajiro in Yabushige's domain. Omi receives a message from his uncle to prepare for Toranaga's arrival. |

| Blackthorne and Mariko struggle to contain the secret that could get them both killed. Yabushige searches for the spy who has betrayed his intentions to Lord Toranaga. |
