John,
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce is complaining that
the very modest measure just announced by the Liberal government to
cap the number of temporary foreign workers and students will
“unfairly” hurt businesses.
Business lobby groups have
for years been among the most vocal advocates for mass
immigration.
But why should we care if some businesses
are hurt by cutting immigration?
It’s up to businesses to adapt to the needs of
society at large — NOT to society to radically transform itself so as
to fulfill the needs of businesses.
There are
other ways to deal with labour shortages than importing cheap labour
from abroad.
One major reason why our productivity has been
stagnating for years is that businesses prefer to hire low-wage
immigrant workers rather than invest in productivity-enhancing
technologies.
That’s also why our standard of living
hasn’t been increasing.
Businesses can also offer
higher wages to attract local workers, even if that means also
increasing the price of what they sell.
If they can’t find
ways to remain competitive, perhaps it’s because there’s no viable
market for their products and they should do something else.
Of course, the best help would be a lower tax and
regulatory burden, which is what they should focus on instead of
acting as parasites constantly lobbying the government for subsidies
and cheap foreign labour.
I’m a strong believer in
free markets — and being dependent on government intervention to stay
afloat is not it.
When evaluating immigration levels, we should be
looking first at our capacity to integrate immigrants, cultural
stability and social cohesion, pressure on housing and infrastructure,
wages and cost of living, etc., and not at answering the short-term
labour needs of businesses.
What is more
important? Protect our standard of living and quality of life? Or help
business managers make quick profits?
Business lobbies
pushing for mass immigration are not working in the interest of
Canadians.
It’s time to once again put Canadians
first!
John, there’re four more days left before the
end of the quarter and we still need to raise $45,000 to reach our
goal.

-Max
