As Congress continues developing ways to provide aid to the country during
the coronavirus pandemic, there is one glaring omission in the recent laws
they have passed: universal paid sick leave.

workers with guaranteed paid sick leave! >>

One of the most important parts of our global community’s coronavirus
response is to minimize human interaction until the number of infectious
cases decreases substantially. This means that millions of people across
the United States must halt going in to work the second they feel any
symptoms or if they are living with or caring for someone who has
COVID-19; and while some people can telework, many more cannot, especially
low wage and domestic workers.

Low wage and domestic workers are on the frontlines of providing necessary
resources and care to communities across the country – and thus have a
heightened risk of contracting the coronavirus. How can workers be
expected to self-quarantine for the mandated 14 days if they are not
guaranteed paid sick leave?

That’s why we need to make sure the government protects everyone who
currently is not guaranteed paid sick leave by mandating that it be
provided by their employer.

Last week, Congress passed a $2 trillion bipartisan emergency relief
package, and while a good initial first step, it falls short of providing
the complete coverage that many people need – right now.

The right to health and safety during a crisis should not be the purview
of only a few – it should widely available for all. We’re going to keep at
it until Congress makes that happen.

Our nation’s workers deserve better.
