Friend,

I am the only woman challenger in California to move forward after the March 5th primary.

In a year where reproductive freedom is unquestionably on the ballot and provides the sharpest contrast between Republicans and Democrats, the fact that I’m the only woman in California left to draw the contrast is both sobering and cements my commitment to ensuring that women have a voice in Congress.

Throughout my career, I’ve been the only woman in the room – from Baghdad to Pacific Command to the California wildfire crisis, I’ve taken jobs where most of my peers and bosses have been men. I’ve had to work twice as hard, and usually needed to deliver twice the results to be given a seat at the table. Despite those challenges, I’ve always worked hard to do the job at hand, and have managed to build coalitions, win allies and support, allowing me to still be an effective public servant despite the obstacles.

It’s well-known that, historically, one of the largest hurdles preventing more women from serving in elected offices is not recruiting women to run for office. But this cycle, the issue wasn’t recruitment. Remarkably, there were women running in seven out of the eight “races in play.” One dropped out before the primary, and six lost their primaries, leaving me as the last woman standing in California.

California seats that have been held by California women will now be held by men. The California Senate seats held by women since the “Year of the Woman” in 1992, will be men, and the Congressional seats currently held by Katie Porter, Anna Eshoo, and Grace Napolitano, now have only male contenders.

It is clear that we still need to fight hard for women’s representation in Congress. If we had achieved parity over the last fifty years, we wouldn’t be in the position of having to re-litigate such a basic and fundamental right – women’s reproductive rights would have been firmly secure.

As the last woman on the California battlefield, of course, I will do what I’ve had to do my entire career: out-hustle and outwork the boys. Our campaign has raised over $1 million for the cycle, we have over 500 active volunteers, and despite an extremely Republican turnout in the California primaries, I had the second-highest vote share of any Democratic challenger in California (and I didn’t spend any money on ads in the primary). I even got 12,000 more votes than Donald Trump in the primary here in CA-03, which feels like a victory for all women.

You all know that national political watchers use one main metric to determine the efficacy of a campaign: fundraising. And so far, I’ve hit every marker they’ve given me. But I have a big fundraising deadline for the end of the first quarter of 2024 this Sunday, and if I’m going to be the last woman standing in California after polls close on November 5, I need your help to reach our next major benchmark.

Being the last woman standing in California means this campaign is now bigger than me or you — it’s about protecting our fundamental freedoms and ensuring we’ve got strong, equitable, and effective representation in Washington. Chip in before Sunday to send me to Congress this November so we can get to work »  [[link removed]]

I started this political journey in a sea of women and pink knit hats, demanding that women be seen, heard and elected. We are running this campaign to demand that women’s rights be protected and that women’s equality moves forward.

I’m grateful and honored to have you with me! Let’s do this for your daughters and granddaughters.

Onward!

Jessica
