Last week, more than 1,400 members of our community came together in Seattle and virtually for three days dedicated to reimagining philanthropy. We met in all kinds of ways—workshops, smart talks, world cafés, online discussions—to share ideas and our experiences within the sector. We connected with the Seattle community through acts of community service. And through the practice of emergent learning, and by leaning into our Learn, Share, Evolve Principle, we came away from PEAK2024 energized by ideas that revealed the possibilities for transforming the sector. We couldn’t have asked for a better celebration of our community and all that we can accomplish together!

** Remembering the Legacy of César Chávez

PEAK’s offices will be closed on Monday, April 1, in recognition of César Chávez Day. But, as our own Dolores Estrada wrote last year ([link removed]) , this isn’t just about another day off. “When we observe César Chávez Day, we honor his legacy of labor activity and social justice, and remember how he made sure that the voices of agricultural workers were heard around the world. Just as he moved communities from awareness to action, we aim to do the same for the field of philanthropy.”

** Moving to a Four-Day Workweek
------------------------------------------------------------

As part of PEAK’s focus on staff wellness and being a next-level nonprofit, PEAK will be transitioning to a Monday-to-Thursday workweek. In April, we will be working reduced Friday hours, and our offices will be completely closed on Fridays from May through August. We will resume a five-day workweek in September. Our goal with this pilot program is to reinforce a positive, people-centered work culture that allows staff members to be happier and healthier so that they can show up at their best for themselves, each other, and our community.


** Upcoming Sabbaticals

PEAK’s sabbatical policy is part of our commitment to supporting the growth and wellness of our team members and is available to those who have spent four years with the organization. In celebration of her time with PEAK, Betsy Reid will be on sabbatical from April 8 through May 8, followed by Altinay Cortes and Carolyn Sosnowski later this year.

** Peer Network Spotlight

PEAK offers members diverse peer spaces for learning, sharing, and evolving in our thrivingchapters ([link removed]) andpeer groups ([link removed]) . Each month, we showcase the meaningful programming and networking taking place in these volunteer-led spaces and how the PEAK team is supporting their work. During PEAK2024, all 14 chapters and 8 caucuses and affinity groups hosted in-person meetings. Many of the peer networks used the in-person time to network, deepen member relationships, and plan programs for the year. Our LGBTQ+ Caucus hosted their inaugural meeting while PEAK Midwest and Greater Washington, DC chapters celebrated their recent milestone of reaching more than 1,000 members.

Both the Black Caucus and Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) Caucus featured speakers who spoke about the importance of honoring and respecting personal identity. Yanique Redwood, PhD, led a discussion with the Black Caucus centered on her riveting memoir, White Women Cry & Call Me Angry: A Black Woman’s Memoir on Racism in Philanthropy. She discussed how to find community with others who have had similar experiences. In addition, the AANHPI Caucus had Rahul Gupta share about how the Wing Lake Museum in Seattle offers critical representation as the only pan-Asian Pacific American community-based museum in the United States.

Here’s the latest on how PEAK is engaging with member organizations, partners, nonprofits, and allies in advocating for transformative change and leading the way in advancing equitable and effective grantmaking practices.

President and CEO Satonya Fair joined more than 300 philanthropy-supporting organization colleagues for Foundations on the Hill 2024 (FOTH). This annual conference is the result of a collaboration between United Philanthropy Forum, Independent Sector, and Council on Foundations that works to educate legislators about the most important policy issues for our sector and deliver clear, unified messages about sector priorities as outlined here ([link removed]) . During FOTH, Chief Strategy Officer Betsy Reid joined a delegation led by UPF Senior Policy Director Matthew Evans for a meeting with White House Domestic Policy Council leaders who briefed the group on the Biden administration’s work on racial equity, democracy, and civic engagement, and welcomed ideas for how the philanthropic sector can partner in advancing this work.

Knowledge and Learning Director Lita Ugarte Pardi and Senior Knowledge and Learning Manager Vanessa Elkan served as faculty for Philanthropy Northwest's Philanthropy 101 program. They recently copresented a webinar that provided a deep dive into ways for funders to embed equity throughout the grantmaking cycle, the variety of grant types and grantmaking approaches, and ways to manage relationships with nonprofits.

Satonya penned a blog for Candid, “Embarking on a Continuous Learning Journey to Drive Equity,” ([link removed]) which explored how putting PEAK’s Learn, Share, Evolve Principle into practice can create mindsets of abundance that position funders to collectively drive the sector’s impact in advancing equity.
