The celebration will take place from 6:00--9:00 pm on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at Pearl Street Warehouse.
Don’t delay: the ticket price increases from $160 to $200 after April 7 – and advance ticket purchase is required to attend.
Each ticket sale includes food and drink and directly supports GGWash’s work to make sure this is a region where housing is abundant and affordable, it's easy and safe to get around without a car, and land use decisions prioritize racial, social, and environmental justice.
Why the Sweet Sixteen?
For many people who grow up in the US, your sixteenth birthday is an important milestone. After a lifetime of being dependent on others for basic mobility, you are finally old enough to drive a car by yourself. Unless you live in a walkable place, this might be your first taste of independence. You learn to associate driving with freedom.
City kids know differently though. We were raised outside of car-culture, and for most of us, independence came from walking, biking, or taking public transportation and it happened way before we turned 16.
I've been navigating DC by myself since I was 11, and it profoundly shaped my life. I think everyone deserves that opportunity and its one of the reasons I believe so much in GGWash's work.
As we celebrate our sixteenth birthday, we want to both celebrate and sustain the work to make this region a place where people can thrive without having to drive.
