Hi everyone,
I wanted to share that Evan Greer, director at Fight for the Future, was a guest on NPR’s show “On Point” earlier this week. The episode is about “kids and social media” and she provided an expert perspective on how we urgently need policy interventions rooted in human rights and free expression. Here’s a quick snippet of what she shared on air:
I think we need to ask what policies governing the internet and technology lead to the type of world we want our kids to grow up in…We know that [social media] companies are undermining our democracy, that they're leading to real harms, not just to young people. And so we need solutions that address that fundamental underlying business model of surveillance capitalism.
That means things like privacy legislation, antitrust legislation—so that we have more choices—and algorithmic transparency legislation, so that we can allow researchers and others to audit what these companies are doing, and push them to put better practices in place that keep kids safe, while also ensuring that kids have a voice in what kind of world they're going to be growing up in.
Whether you’re a parent grappling with this topic, a young person wondering what’s next for social media, or simply a concerned internet denizen, this episode is for you. The whole episode is worth a listen, but Evan jumps in about halfway through the show.
