š Welcome to the March edition of The Sister District Dispatch! Every month, weāll catch you up on the latest election news and keep you informed on our collective fight to win permanent progressive power in the states.
2024 is in full swing. Keep reading to learn more about what weāve been up to this month!
ā 2024 State Targets Are Here
In late February, Sister District announced our 2024 Political Strategyāincluding our state targets for this year: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. With additional resources, weāll expand to Minnesota and New Hampshire.
These are states where Democrats are positioned to maintain control of vulnerable chambers (MI, MN, NV, PA), flip chambers blue (AZ, NH, PA, WI), and make inroads in states that are part of our long-term roadmap (GA, NC). Each state is also a presidential battleground, and many have critical Senate, Gubernatorial, and Congressional contests this year.
The Sister District team is busy preparing for our first round of candidate endorsements next month!
We are energized and ready to deploy our trademark combination of tactics rooted in research and tailored to each district. Our volunteers are laying out their plans, getting trained up to speak with battleground voters, and raising early money for candidates who will drive up turnout all the way up the ticket.
Stay tuned for more!
š£ And thatās a Wrap: The 7th Annual Sister District Summit
Earlier this month, we held our seventh annual Sister District Summit! Sister District volunteers, partner organizations, and community organizers from all over the country came together virtually to learn more about our election cycle strategy, discuss effective tactics for recruiting and engaging youth, participate in trainings about digital organizing, and so much more.
We were honored that Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and former Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes joined us!
Learning from each other is one of the best ways we can continue making a big impact at the state level. And while our summit is over, weāre more energized than ever to continue building power in state legislatures with you!
Nevada is the only state in the country with gender parity. This Womenās History Month ā and every month ā weāre working to change that.
Since our founding, Sister District has been committed to empowering and uplifting the voices of women everywhere by helping get more women elected to state legislatures.
š Organizing Update
On April 14, Sister District teams from across the country will join forces for a Bridge Walk for State Bridges! What's a Bridge Walk you ask? Teams from the Bay Area to Portland, Oregon to Washington, DC are gathering to put the "bridge" in State Bridges and cross a bridge in their neighborhood to benefit our State Bridges organizations. It's a fun, active way to get together and support our amazing grassroots partners through a collective day of action.
Check out our Featured Events to see if there's a Bridge Walk near you or grab some friends and start your own! Be sure to take lots of pictures and post them on social with the hashtag #StateBridges
āļø Youāre Invited: Register for the SDAN Research Briefing
Join Sister District Action Network for a virtual research briefing on April 22! Weāll be sharing key findings from a large-scale survey of voter behavior in state legislative races that we conducted with our partners at Data for Progress.
Weāre so excited to present these fascinating results, which help us better understand why voters do, or donāt, vote in down-ballot racesāincluding important subgroups such as women, voters of color, and young voters. This survey is just one piece of our data-driven approach to building progressive power in the states.
Weāve rounded up some key readings important to our work! Check them out:
šļø MEMO: 2024 Sister District Political Strategy As we head into a pivotal presidential election, this memo provides a deep-dive into the factors that present Democrats with opportunities to flip additional chambers, hold fragile legislative majorities, and make strategic gains in inroad states in 2024.
šļø BLOG: States & Stats Newsletter: What is Roll-off and Why Do We Care? Weāre thrilled to have launched our first States & Stats Newsletter. This newsletter, released monthly, will highlight research projects on state legislative data and race targeting, understanding what motivates voters and volunteers down-ballot, and more!
Thatās it for this month! Sister District members like you are essential to our movement ā and thereās no doubt with your help, weāll continue to achieve historic and momentous victories for progressives in states everywhere.
