LaCava's Column PLANNING GROUP AMENDMENTS Community planning groups are a vital voice in our neighborhoods. San Diego was the first to embrace this concept nearly 60 years ago. The Land Use & Housing Committee ratified and updated operating procedures for all 42 groups. With the changes I introduced, and Council ratified in 2022, it is now easier to run for a seat and for the community to vote in their annual elections. More Information REMOVING INVASIVE PLANT SPECIES The California Least Tern is an endangered species, and San Diego is home to more than half of the bird’s nesting preserves, including Mission Bay! I joined San Diego Audubon Society and San Diego Gas & Electric to remove invasive plants to ensure the California Least Terns find suitable conditions for their unique ground-level nests. California Least Tern SAN DIEGO WOMEN OF DISTINCTION AWARD The City of San Diego Women of Distinction Award highlights outstanding and trailblazing women in our region. I proudly presented Margaret Leinen, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and UC San Diego’s Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences with this honor. Margaret Leinen is an award-winning oceanographer and distinguished national and international leader in ocean science, global climate, and environmental issues. Women of Distinction 2024 Awardees INFRASTRUCTURE AND SAFETY UPDATE Did you notice the pavement work on Turquoise Street? All those annoying potholes and longitudinal cracks are now permanently fixed! It sets the stage for the city to return later this year for a curb-to-curb slurry seal. Get It Done App BRISTOL MYERS SQUIBB’S NEW BUILDING Bristol Myers Squibb’s new campus will be another major addition to San Diego’s leading bio-science industry, housing 500+ employees researching and developing treatments for blood cancers, autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases, and more.
