Dear John,

All this week, in the run up to our annual event Zoo Awareness Weekend, we have been releasing daily videos from our latest investigation at Cumbria Safari Zoo - formerly known as South Lakes Zoo.

After all the awful stories still coming out of this zoo, in the press, by our investigations and by those carried out by our friends at Born Free, we knew we had to take further action.

So, we deployed an investigator to go in as a volunteer, to get behind the scenes and uncover what happens there, often away from visitors.

The shocking new videos from the investigation show…. nothing has changed.

Now we need your help to take action against this zoo, dubbed ‘the UK’s worst zoo’ by the press.

Will you send a gift today so we can ensure we can continue to fight for animals like Mona and Zippy?

With YOUR support I know we can win this campaign and get this zoo closed down once and for all!

Mona and Zippy are two elderly bears. They are in a really poor and noisy enclosure, right next to the café, with nowhere to escape from the public gaze.

But what got me the most was the lack of respect for these two old bears, with a keeper describing them as a ‘pain in the arse’
as they ‘do not cooperate’.

We always knew this was going to be a hard battle to win and we always knew we would have to stay in this for the long haul. But….

How many animals have to die, get injured, or escape?
What does a zoo have to do to be closed down?

Below is just a snap shot of the investigators findings and what you will see in the videos, it is a disgrace!
* Animals with stitches
* Dead baby kangaroo in the pond
* Overcrowding
* Flooding of enclosures
* Stereotypical behaviours
* Kangaroos with lumpy jaw (disease linked to poor husbandry and stress)
* Animals being fed unsuitable foods
* Emaciated meerkat
* Lemur with broken arm
* Poor husbandry

The list of ‘stories’ from the investigation that I could write to you about are heartbreaking. But these are not just stories, these are the realities of animal’s lives. Lives that matter!
Investigator "Early on in my volunteering role I was asked to help search for a baby kangaroo who was missing.

What we found will live with me forever. In the kangaroo enclosure is a pond. Unbelievably there’s no fence, and there, floating at the edge of the pond was the baby. How long they lay there dead, I do not know, but I do know that I was not supposed to see that and I was ushered away very quickly".

There are only 2 meerkats in the zoo and one of these souls is emaciated. He clearly doesn’t get enough food. Yes, he is old but that is no excuse for the state of him, he needs access to food at all times. He has a terrible wound on his tail and his only heat source is above a bare rock in full view of the public.

Investigator "I was shocked when I heard a staff member say that lemurs had seemingly frozen to death outside at night as they don’t always want to come in. They also said that babies can be abandoned by their mothers and on one of my days we found a baby lemur, just lying on the floor. They still had their umbilical cord attached.
Later I was told they died.
Could these events have been prevented? Are they caused by the overcrowding issues with the lemurs?"

Now we are ramping up pressure on the council to take action and demanding they close this zoo once and for all. With your help I know we can achieve this.

Please, send a gift today and help us continue the fight for these animals.

Sadly, it is too late for those who have already become victims of this zoo, but it is not too late for those still there.

Your gift could help with:

> £5 will help equip more grassroots groups with campaign materials to hold protests outside this zoo.

> £10 will ensure we are here to listen to whistleblowers as they come forward and be ready to take action.

> £20 will help pay for a legal advisor so we can present the strongest case to fight for these animals.

As you know we have been campaigning for this for many years, but we always come up against support for the zoo and a council that won’t take appropriate action.

But that’s why we are here. To make them listen and share the truth.

There's so much more that can be done, and we won’t give up until this place is finally closed and the animals are moved to safety.

You can help make the closure of this zoo a reality!

Your gift, no matter how small, will have a meaningful impact on the lives of these animals. Together, we can advocate for a future where they are treated with compassion and respect.

For the animals,
