Let me be very direct with you: Families should not be sleeping on the street. 

Mission Local: Supe Safaí urges city to house homeless children

We call ourselves a Sanctuary City, yet we have families and asylum seekers waiting weeks for shelter. This leaves children forced to sleep in vehicles and on the sidewalks of our streets. 

As an immigrant myself, my mother and I fled violence in Iran to seek safety in the U.S. when I was a child. I was only five years old. I am now a father of two, and I can’t imagine having to see my children sleep on the streets.

I empathize with these families and understand the fear and uncertainty they face. That’s why I’m standing with them and the Faith in Action organization calling for the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing to prioritize families with children to receive shelter the same day that they arrive.

San Francisco deserves a mayor who won’t leave families on the street. As your mayor, I will prioritize our children’s safety and protect our vulnerable communities.
