Like something out of a sci-fi movie, artificial intelligence (AI) is expanding rapidly into nearly every industry.
Sure, automation makes our jobs easier and frees us from daily nitty-gritty tasks. But what happens if this whole thing spirals out of control? Some claim it could eliminate jobs and lead to economic or national security risks.
Many states have already passed laws limiting the use of AI in areas like police investigations and hiring, but Congress is late to the game on regulation.
As we scramble to play catch-up, it appears we’re turning to the Korean War era Defense Production Act to rein this in. But how in the world do we expect legislation from the 1950s to steer technology that’s changing daily?
My main concern is that we’ll end up regulating the heck out of AI in another classic case of federal overreach.
