This is Claudia Wilner, Litigation and Advocacy Director at NCLEJ. As we enter the final days of our End-of-Quarter fundraising campaign, I’d like to tell you about the importance of supporting NCLEJ in our work to advance racial, economic, and disability justice.
When we win our class action lawsuits, we positively impact the lives of tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people who are too often at the mercy of punitive and predatory government practices.
In November 2023, a federal court granted final approval of a settlement in our class action lawsuit charging the New York City Transit Authority for aggressively going after thousands of New Yorkers for alleged debts. People targeted were unable to challenge default judgments or tax refund seizures in violation of their due process rights.
This victory significantly enhances notices and procedures that protect the rights of New Yorkers disproportionately targeted with unfair fines and fees – including low-income people, people experiencing homelessness, and people of color.
The National Center for Law and Economic Justice advances racial and economic justice through ground-breaking impact litigation, policy advocacy, and support for grassroots organizing. We have provided legal representation and support since 1965.
