In 2005, I was forced to leave my beloved home country of Iraq amidst widespread violence. Medical professionals like me were often targets of attacks. I had no idea when I’d return home.
When I relocated to Jordan, I joined Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) as a surgeon at Amman Hospital. The war in my home country brought in patients from all corners of Iraq into Jordan—from Basra to Mosul, Najaf, and beyond. I treated fellow Iraqi people who survived car explosions and endured severe wounds due to the war.
About 90 percent of MSF staff around the world are locally recruited like me. In addition to responding when a crisis strikes, MSF is also committed to investing in health care systems and communities. And as Iraq’s health care sector continues to recover, it brings me great pride to treat my fellow Iraqi people. At Amman Hospital, my colleagues and I are dedicated to providing the highest quality of care possible to anyone who needs it.
MSF doctors and staff members cannot do this vital work without you, friend. In honor of Doctors Day, will you make a matched gift to double your impact and fuel our lifesaving projects around the world? |
