In what may be its most shameless exploitation of the coronavirus emergency yet, the Trump administration has announced that it will stop enforcing our nation’s environmental rules.

And it won’t say when — or even if — it will go back to protecting our air and water from corporate polluters.

Go ahead and read those two sentences again if they didn’t quite sink in.

Essentially, the former coal industry lobbyist installed by Donald Trump to run the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (into the ground) has given polluting industries permission to “regulate” themselves.

Big Oil lobbied aggressively for this unjustified — and unjustifiable — privilege. (Not that the Trump camp needs much of a push to sell out to corporate greed.)

Do they really think the American people are gullible enough to believe that letting Big Business pollute with impunity will help everyday Americans and small businesses get through this crisis?

This is by-the-numbers deregulation for the sake of corporate profits under the cloak of phony emergency management.

It’s contemptible, frankly.

Of course, that’s Trump’s game plan: Keep doing outrageous, callous, destructive things and hope that we’ll all get worn out trying to keep up.

But maybe right now — as Americans stay home in unprecedented numbers to slow the spread of the virus — we have a little more time to take notice of Trump’s corruption and take action against it.

So please join me in telling the EPA to immediately reinstate its enforcement of our country’s environmental rules.

Add your name now.

Thanks for taking action.

Stay safe.
