The focus of this week’s CUFI Action Update is going to touch on a different aspect of our work. While the Action Fund does not engage in electioneering, and we see most Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle as generally open to hearing our arguments in support of a strong US-Israel relationship, even when we disagree with an elected official on one issue we can often find common ground elsewhere. In the rarest of circumstances, certain elected officials seem committed to opposing every element of the CUFI agenda. When that happens, we want to be sure that you have the
public record available to you. As such, this update lays out key votes taken by Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky. We think Christian Zionists in the Blue Grass state and around the country will be shocked to learn this Representative’s positions. In a nutshell, as CUFI and President Trump have sought to strengthen the US-Israel relationship, Rep. Massie has voted to undermine it. As
we have worked to use education to combat anti-Semitism, Rep. Massie has opposed that as well. As elected officials from the White House to Congress have worked to counter Iran and Turkey, Representative Massie has taken positions that would enable those countries to continue their malicious foreign policies without consequence. Rep Massie has opposed CUFI’s and President Trump’s priorities at every turn. And we at the Action Fund thought as committed supporters of Israel, you would want to be aware of his record. For starters, in 2014 Representative Massie was the only Member of Congress to vote against the United States – Israel Strategic Partnership Act, and last year, Massie voted against a resolution condemning the anti-Semitic movement to Boycott, Divest from and Sanction Israel. In late January of this year, Rep. Massie was one of just 5 individuals to vote against the CUFI-backed Never Again Education Act, which will expand Holocaust education in the United States in the hopes of inoculating the next generation against the rising tide of anti-Semitism sweeping across the country. Late last year, Rep. Massie was one of just 16 Representatives to vote against the Protect Against Conflict by Turkey Act, which provided a strong, targeted economic response to the crisis caused by Turkey’s invasion of northern Syria and prevents the sale of arms to Turkey for use in Syria. Providing a detailed description of all of Representative Massie’s votes against efforts to curb Iran’s support for terror and nuclear ambitions would take far too long, but here is a snapshot of the Congressman’s relevant positions: - One of just three Representatives to vote against the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (07/25/18)
- One of just three Republicans to vote against the Iranian Leadership Asset Transparency Act (12/13/17)
- One of just two Representatives to vote against the Iran Ballistic Missiles and International Sanctions Enforcement Act (10/26/17)
- Was the only Member of Congress to vote “present” on a resolution that would have approved of the Iran nuclear accord, which President Obama implemented and President Trump tore up (09/11/15)
As you can see, if you’re a supporter of Israel, and If you want to combat
anti-Semitism and keep enemies like Turkey and Iran at bay, then Representative Massie is not representing your views. To stay up-to-date on the most important issues affecting the US-Israel relationship, including where certain elected officials stand on these matters, keep reading the Action Update.
Sincerely, CUFI Action Fund Team
