Dear John,

As the first national public foundation to focus on issues that impact women, Women’s History Month is a particularly meaningful time at the Ms. Foundation. This month, I’m reminded of a quote from our Co-Founding Mother Gloria Steinem, who recently celebrated the incredible milestone of her 90th birthday

“At my age, in this still hierarchical time, people often ask me if I’m ‘passing the torch.’ I explain that I’m keeping my torch, thank you very much — and I’m using it to light the torches of others.”

At this tenuous time in women’s history, I love the idea that lighting other’s torches needn’t come at the cost of your own. When women rise, we all rise. At the Ms. Foundation, we’re proud to have spent the past 50 years lighting the torches of feminist leaders, and we’re excited to continue doing so for however long it takes to achieve gender equity.

In solidarity,

Ms. Foundation in the News

President & CEO Teresa C. Younger joined Comcast Newsmakers to discuss the burnout crisis many women and nonbinary leaders of color are facing, how philanthropy can better support these leaders and their organizations, and other findings from our recent Living with Pocket Change report.

“These organizations are quintessential to our democracy in America. They're the ones that are making sure people have food at their table, can vote, are speaking up at their state and local legislators. These are the people who are organizing and bringing folks together,” said Teresa. Watch the full interview now!

Chief Advancement Officer Ruth McFarlane joined Orr Group for an interview released on International Women's Day as part of their Partner Perspectives series, where she discussed her unique career path, and how it led to her work advancing equity and justice at the Ms. Foundation. Ruth is passionate about building and amplifying people of color, queer, and women’s leadership, and catalyzing societal change – listen to the conversation here.

Listen: “When We Win” Podcast

The first season of the “When We Win” podcast came to a close this month, and we’re proud to have been a presenting partner. Throughout the season, political strategist and host Maya Rupert spoke to some of the most incredible women of color in office today who ran against insurmountable odds and won, from the all-women city council in St. Paul, Minnesota, to the youngest Black woman to serve in Congress.
