|  | | Dear John, As the first national public foundation to focus on issues that impact women, Women’s History Month is a particularly meaningful time at the Ms. Foundation. This month, I’m reminded of a quote from our Co-Founding Mother Gloria Steinem, who recently celebrated the incredible milestone of her 90th birthday: “At my age, in this still hierarchical time, people often ask me if I’m ‘passing the torch.’ I explain that I’m keeping my torch, thank you very much — and I’m using it to light the torches of others.” At this tenuous time in women’s history, I love the idea that lighting other’s torches needn’t come at the cost of your own. When women rise, we all rise. At the Ms. Foundation, we’re proud to have spent the past 50 years lighting the torches of feminist leaders, and we’re excited to continue doing so for however long it takes to achieve gender equity.
