John — can you stay with us for a moment while we get a little wonky?
We're writing to you today about something in the Congressional rules called the Motion to Recommit (MTR).
A Motion to Recommit is the last chance for Members of Congress to stop or amend a bill before it gets a final vote on the floor of the House, by either sending a bill back to committee or proposing an amendment.
But this simple legislative procedure has been weaponized by Republicans who have used it to divide Democrats. They tack last-minute MTR's on to important pieces of legislation, causing Democrats to reconsider their votes and water down an otherwise progressive bill.
And while some Democrats have been swayed by these right-wing tactics, Matt refuses to play into the game. He has voted for ZERO Republican MTR's this year, sticking by his values despite representing a district that Trump won by almost 10 points!
Matt will stand strong – even in his toss-up district – but he needs your help to keep up the fight!
