Dear friend,

Late last year, the Albanese Government released 149 criminals from detention.

We later learned this included seven murderers, 37 sex offenders and 72 violent offenders.

This followed months of ignoring warnings and failing to prepare for a High Court decision.

In fact, the Albanese Government approved funding for the legal challenge against its own system of detention.

Multiple people breached their visa conditions once released. At least 18 were charged by state and territory police for various offences.

Despite rushing through legislation in December last year, the Government has still not made a single application to lock up any of these criminals.

This week, Government officials admitted that 73 of the 152 people now released are not wearing tracking ankle bracelets.

On Tuesday, the Government tried to rush through legislation, for the fourth time in four months.

The Coalition will do everything we can to help keep Australians safe.

However, we are mindful of the botched approach of this Government. We want to avoid unintended consequences.

When the last Labor Government lost control of our borders, there were over 50,000 arrivals on over 800 boats, costing the budget billions. It also caused human misery.

The Coalition stopped the boats and secured our borders. This enabled the closure of 19 detention centres.

Australia does not want to see this Government lose control of border security again.

We stand ready to assist the Government, including dealing with legislation that has been subjected to proper scrutiny.

Unfortunately, Labor seems incapable of learning from its mistakes and is creating chaos.

Regards,

Dan Tehan MP
Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship
